Making the Path to Food Support a Little Shorter

September 17, 2026

Last week, a team from Metro Nashville Public Schools spent an hour walking our aisles with us. I've been wanting to have this meeting for a long time.

We talked about families, about access, and about how we might make it easier for students experiencing hunger to get connected to support.

One of the most disheartening statistics I share at our Lunch & Learns is that 1 in 5 children in our community faces food uncertainty.

I struggle with that number every time I say it. Because behind it are kids trying to learn, grow and simply be kids while their families are doing everything they can to keep food on the table.

And sometimes, the challenge isn't only finding enough food. It's finding the right support.

For a parent already stretched thin, navigating referrals, paperwork and services across Nashville can be another burden. I've wondered for a long time: What if we could reach students experiencing hunger right where they are every day? What if we could create a more direct path for their families to get the support they need?

That’s what made this meeting so exciting.

We're working to finalize a partnership that will connect MNPS students experiencing food insecurity directly with The Store, giving their families an opportunity to shop for fresh, healthy groceries with dignity and choice.

This is the kind of partnership that makes me hopeful. Schools know their students and families. The Store knows how to provide groceries with dignity and connect neighbors to a broader community of support. By working together, we can make it easier for families to get help when they need it.

There is still work to do, and we'll formally introduce this partnership in the coming weeks. But I was too excited not to share where we're headed.

I'm deeply grateful to the wonderful team at the MNPS Family and Community Partnerships office, to our MNPS board member Whitney Slocvicke, and to Jasmine Ledsinger, for the work that has brought us to this point.

Sometimes changing the trajectory for a family starts by making the path to help a little shorter.

More to come very soon.

The Store is working toward a new partnership with Metro Nashville Public Schools to connect students experiencing food insecurity and their families directly with fresh, healthy groceries. By bringing schools and community support closer together, we hope to make getting help simpler, more accessible, and rooted in dignity and choice.
