Keeping Love at The Core
Two of our most loyal volunteers asked to meet with me separately over the past few weeks.
I wasn't sure what to expect going in.Both conversations landed in the same place: "As you keep growing, don't lose what makes The Store unique."
These weren't vague concerns. Since opening our second location, we've been clearing our waiting list — welcoming more households than ever to shop with us for fresh, healthy food. And with that growth, something subtle has been shifting.
Volunteers are working harder and faster just to keep pace with a busy shopping day. Less room for the casual conversation. Harder to stop everything and walk alongside an older adult as they shop.
The message was clear: reaching more families is good. But hold on to the heart of it. Keep making space for community, connection, and compassion — for love at the Core.
What a gift. These volunteers took the initiative to share something honest because they care so deeply about this place.
Since those conversations, we've decided to start a volunteer advisory committee. A regular way to stay close to the people who often see The Store most clearly — because in many cases, our volunteers know what life is really like on the ground for our customers.
One small problem: so many volunteers signed up that we're going to need two committees.
Even better.
To every volunteer and to everyone in The Store community — keep the feedback coming. I'm always open to meeting with anyone who has thoughts on how we put our customers first.
That's how we keep love at the Core. Not once, but every week, every single shopping trip.
