“It Was Hope”: Ms. Kim’s Story Reminds Us What This Expansion Is Really About
At our ribbon cutting last week, a surprise speaker stole the show.(Hint: it wasn’t me.)
This has been a time of excitement for The Store. A new building, expanded cooler space, emergency clothing access, and for the first time, actual offices for our team. It’s a big leap forward.
But even as we celebrated this new space, we knew we had to stay grounded. Because this expansion wasn’t about having more. It was about doing more - for our neighbors facing food insecurity.
And that’s exactly what Ms. Kim reminded us of.
Ms. Kim is a customer and volunteer at The Store. At our ribbon cutting, she took the mic and shared her story. People were cheering one moment and wiping away tears the next.
She spoke of raising two preteen grandchildren on a fixed income. About the emotional weight of stretching every dollar. About what it means to smile and reassure your family when you’re not sure how far the groceries will go.
“I did my best to protect them from the stress,” she said. “You smile. You keep going. But inside, there’s a constant concern about whether you’re doing enough.”
Then she found The Store.
“Walking through those doors was unlike anything I’d ever experienced,” she said. “I wasn’t judged. I wasn’t rushed. And what meant the most to me was the dignity of choice. I could pick food that met my grandchildren’s needs, and even some of their favorite snacks.”
That word, dignity, is the heart of it.
Ms. Kim described something that doesn’t always show up in a budget or blueprint: hope.
“The relief wasn’t just about food,” she said. “It was emotional. It was mental. It was hope.”
Hope that she could keep providing.
Hope that her grandkids could focus on being kids.
Hope that she wasn’t alone.
She ended her speech with this: “What’s coming from this new location is more than a building. It means families don’t have to wait until they’re in crisis. It means support comes sooner, and it’s wrapped in compassion.”
Ms. Kim, you grounded us in what matters most.
You inspire us to stay focused on the mission and bold in our work to end food insecurity across Middle Tennessee.
This expansion is for you, and for every neighbor who deserves choice, dignity, and community.
At the ribbon cutting for The Store’s second location, it wasn’t a CEO or a founder who delivered the most powerful message—it was Ms. Kim, a grandmother, customer, and volunteer whose story left the crowd cheering and in tears. In this blog post, we reflect on her honest, moving testimony about the emotional weight of food insecurity and the relief she found in dignity, choice, and community. Her words grounded the moment and reminded us: this expansion isn’t just about square footage—it’s about doing more, sooner, for families who deserve more than survival. They deserve support wrapped in compassion—and a future filled with hope.
